Belt Solutions for the Energy Industry

In addition to Megadyne v-belts, which are ideal for horsehead pump applications in oil recovery, we also offer a line of RPC Platinum synchronous timing belts.

Featuring a “dual core” hybrid tensile cord design combined with a nitrile-based HNBR rubber compound body, Platinum belts offer the high performance and durability needed for applications in the energy industry. In comparison to other belts, Platinum requires no post-installation re-tensioning, eliminating the need for disruptive maintenance.

Unlike polyurethane belts, Platinum is ideal for high-temperature environments. Platinum can withstand temperatures up to 239 °F, compared to only 185 °F for polyurethane belts.

This line of belts also offers a high power capacity; allowing the use of a narrower width in comparison to other belts, resulting in reduced noise, drive weight, and bearing load while allowing for significant energy savings and increased efficiency. The rubber body, specifically, ensures low-noise operation while offering greater flexibility than polyurethane belts.

Wind Turbines

Actually a form of solar energy — the result of uneven heating of the atmosphere, the Earth’s surface irregularities, and the rotation of our planet — wind can be used to power a range of complex operations. “Wind power,” specifically, refers to the process in which wind is harnessed for the generation of mechanical power or electricity.

For instance, wind turbines — either horizontal- or vertical-axis, on land or offshore — convert the wind’s kinetic energy into mechanical power, which can then be used for processes such as grinding grain or pumping water.

Alternatively, this mechanical power generated can also be converted into electricity. Synchronous timing belts provide ideal solutions for wind turbines, offering high-load carrying capacity and maintenance-free, long-lasting performance.

Oil Recovery

Synchronous timing belts are also well-suited to use in the oil recovery industry, which is comprised of three distinct phases, as shown below.

  1. Primary recovery — During this phase, the natural pressure of the reservoir drives oil into the wellbore. Combined with artificial lift techniques (such as the use of pumps), this brings the oil to the surface. Only about 10% of the reservoir’s original oil is produced during this phase.
  2. Secondary recovery — This second phase effectively extends the life of an oilfield by injecting water or gas in order to displace oil and drive it to a production wellbore. This results in the recovery of 20-40% of the original oil in place.
  3. Tertiary (or enhanced) recovery — Enhanced oil recovery (EOR) techniques offer 30-60% or more of the reservoir’s original oil in place. Three primary methods of EOR are available: thermal recovery, gas injection, and chemical injection, each of which has shown varying degrees of commercial success.

Oil Refinement

Megadyne belting solutions are also frequently used in oil refinement applications, the simplest of which consist of crude, vacuum, and reforming operations, as well as some hydrotreating applications. More complex refineries also include cooking and hydrocracking capabilities, as well as more extensive hydrotreating.

Starting out with unrefined liquid petroleum, the refining process separates crude oil into different components to be used in a wide range of applications, including plastics and high-performance fuels. Megadyne’s synchronous belts provide the high strength, unmatched durability, and long life span needed for these harsh environments.

Synchronous belts are widely used in various heat transfer processes in the oil and gas industry. Platinum belts are ideal for use in these applications known as air-cooled heat exchangers (ACHE) and are also referred to as fin-fan drives.
